Forces on a Vertical Dam due to Solitary Impulse Wave Run-Up and Overtopping

چکیده
Impulse waves feature tsunami-like characteristics and are generated by very rapid mass wasting, including landslides avalanches, into water bodies. In engineered reservoirs, these may run up overtop the dam, thereby exerting hydrostatic dynamic forces on its structure. For this work, solitary were applied as a proxy for impulse acting vertical structures during wave run-up overtopping investigated with hydraulic laboratory experiments. The in channel piston-type generator horizontal pressure at wall well dam-like structure measured multiple sensors. discrete data used to interpolate distributions resulting forces. Empirical equations derived, approximating maximum their respective centers of within ±7% both cases without overtopping. small freeboards, already relative amplitudes exert similar those induced an earthquake estimated pseudo-static approach.

Extreme wave run-up on a vertical cliff
Wave impact and run-up onto vertical obstacles constitutes one of the main phenomena which have to be taken into account in the design of coastal structures. From the linear wave theory we know that the wave height on a vertical wall is twice the incident wave amplitude. Weakly nonlinear theories bring some small corrections to this result. However, in the present study we show that certain sim...
متن کاملVulnerability of Buildings on Coastal Dikes due to Wave Overtopping
The vulnerability of buildings on coastal dikes due to overtopping wave impacts is difficult to assess. A method is developed in this paper to quantify the vulnerability of masonry buildings on a coastal dike exposed to wave overtopping. Using previous studies, the accidental loads due to the extreme wave impacts are characterized. Using the approach from Eurocode 6, the strength of masonry bui...
متن کاملBoussinesq Modelling of Solitary Wave Propagation, Breaking, Runup and Overtopping
A one-dimensional hybrid numerical model is presented of a shallow-water flume with an incorporated piston paddle. The hybrid model is based on the improved Boussinesq equations by Madsen and Sørensen (1992) and the nonlinear shallow water equations. It is suitable for breaking and non-breaking waves and requires only two adjustable parameters: a friction coefficient and a wave breaking paramet...
متن کاملNumerical Wave Tank Analysis of Wave Run-Up On a Truncated Vertical Cylinder
A new far-field closure condition for a CFD-based numerical wave tank that uses a potential wave solution to overlay the outer computational domain of a CFD solution is described. A prescribed potential wave solution covers the region beyond a diameter more than 10 times of floater footprints. The diffracted waves from the body are absorbed by the ‘potential-attractor’ terms applied in the inte...
